DOBI & Carotene Content in Palm Oil

Merck's Spectrophotometer is a versatile instrument that enables precise quantification of specific parameters in palm oil. It allows for the measurement of various components, such as Carotene Analysis and Deterioration of Bleachability Index (DOBI) Determination.

  1. Carotene Analysis: Spectrophotometry is widely used to determine the carotene content in palm oil. This analysis provides valuable information about the nutritional value and quality of the oil.
  2. Deterioration of Bleachability Index (DOBI) Determination:  DOBI is a crucial parameter used to assess the quality of palm oil, which is dependent on the quality of the fruit, as well as its ripeness and storage conditions, helping to evaluate the oil's processing stability and shelf life. The DOBI value indicates how easy it is to refine crude palm oil. A value of less than 1.8 implies poor quality, while values greater than 3 signify high quality. 

The Global Standard

The international standard ISO 17932:2011 was established to check these two important parameters in palm oil. The standard specifies a method for the determination of the DOBI of crude palm oil and the carotene content of crude or bleached palm oil and their fractions by spectrophotometric examination in the ultraviolet and visible range of the spectrum.

You won’t need to perform any calibrations or calculations. The photometer is pre-calibrated and calculates the DOBI index and carotene content automatically after measuring the absorption.

  • Determination of the deterioration of bleachability index (DOBI) of raw palm oil according to DIN EN ISO 17932:2011
    Procedure: A homogeneous sample is mixed with isooctane and filtered. Extinctions at 446 nm and 269 nm are determined. DOBI is calculated automatically.
  • Determination of the carotene content of raw palm oil according to DIN EN ISO 17932:2011
    Procedure: A homogeneous sample is mixed with isooctane and filtered. Extinction at 446 nm is determined. Carotene content is calculated automatically.
